Charlotte Plumber | Colder Days Are Ahead

AAA City Plumbing helps Charlotte NC families prepare their homes for the cold days to come.

I want to help you prepare your home for the cold season here in Charlotte, Rock Hill, Fort Mill and surrounding areas. Let me tell you a quick story about my home last year.

I was out of town on plumbing business and a cold front moved in quickly here in Charlotte NC. My family was home alone. My wife was left with the task of preparing our home for the brisk weather coming! She did a great job! Unfortunately, she was left scrambling for items we needed from Lowes or Home Depot. I don't want this to happen to my family again or yours! If we both plan ahead we can get these things before they are gone with the first blast of winter weather!

Let's get going and prepare your home for cold weather!

Items we will need:

Foam Faucet Cover.........as many spigots as you have outside attached to your home and outside buildings. You can find them here. These will attach easily to your home to protect outside faucets.

Water heater blanket insulation.........1 for each water heater, well house, exposed plumbing in outdoor buildings. (My barn has exposed pipes under the sink)
You can find water heater blankets at Lowes. You will want to wrap these around your water heater and secure with tape. Also wrap your well and exposed pipes and secure with tape.

And last but not least inside your home leave cabinets open under your sinks to allow warm air to get in. Oh and of course the old trick of letting your faucet drip!
It is my hope that this will help you be prepared for when the cold weather strikes here in the Carolinas.

Have you ever smelled  that strange odor coming form your bathroom, but you just cleaned the entire home ? This smelly odor could be a" tell all " sign of something much more . SEPTIC TANK issues.  If your field drain is clogged or broken, the tank could have already filled up cause the raw sewage has no place to drain and you're getting back-up odor through the sewer drains. Also, if there is a break or clog in your line, you could have a wet sewage spot in your yard along the field drain and you would be getting odor from that, especially during rain. It may mot even be very visible during dry times cause the ground isn't saturated and it is possibly oozing on down into the soil. but if this IS the case of a broken/ clogged field drain backing into the yard, it is NOT healthy for kids (or adults) who may be playing or such where the back-up is. You DO need a plumber; He might can snake out your drains thru the clean-out plug, but if not you could be looking at a couple thousand to make a new field drain. Here @ AAA CITY PLUMBING we are currently running specials on free estimates. Don't let this opportunity pass you by, give us a call (704) 544-1909 or (803) 327-5171.

Free Estimate's

Ever wonder what it would cost to fix that toilet handle, that you have to shake after a flush ? Better yet, have you taken a look at your utility bill to see just what that "shake" may be costing you ?
In today's economy & the uncertainty of our government shut downs we are here @ http://aaacityplumbing.com/ to assist   by offering our FREE ESTIMATES on all of your home repairs from the bathroom, kitchen sink, well, & septic issues. Our qualified trained technician's are on call 24/7. Give us a call (704)544-1909 or (803)327-5171.

Here are some solutions to finding out that a FREE estimate is in order :

Tip #1 ) Toilets are the #1 worst water wasters. To see if your flapper is leaking, drop about 4 to 6 drops of food coloring in the tank, and let it sit for about 10 minutes. If you see the food coloring in the bowl, your flapper is faulty, and needs to be replaced.
Tip #2) To see if you have a water leak make sure everything is turned off in the house, and go to the water meter, and look at the dial face. You should see 2 arrows, 1 is the large arrow that spins all the way around the face. the smaller arrow is a dial use indicator. If all your faucets are turned off, and the small arrow is spinning, you have a leak somewhere. See if you have a valve next to the house, and turn it off. If you still have the small arrow moving, then there is a leak in the pipe underground, from the meter to the house. If you find this, then a licensed plumber is your best bet.
Tip # 3 )Look for  early signs /symptoms that septic tank problems exist. They usually go unnoticed and  by the time  outward appearance and visible signs occur the problem has moved to your drain field.
You can suspect the problem is the drain field if:
• there are odors or persistent wet spots over the field.
• the plumbing becomes sluggish over a period of time, or when it's used heavily, or during wet months
• problems persist even though the tank has been pumped recently
• the septic tank is flooded

Good luck... and as always we are "Your Plumber for life "

Why do showerheads need cleaning?
Showerheads often spray unevenly because their tiny holes have gotten plugged with mineral deposits. In order for water to flow freely, you need to remove these deposits. To do that, you may want to soak the showerhead in in vinegar. Above is an illustration that's simple and can be left over night for an effective cleaning. If the results are not satisfactory the next day then follow the steps below:
Advanced Cleaning
If mineral deposits prove to be beyond the power of vinegar alone, you will need to remove the showerhead to do a more thorough cleaning.

Disconnect the showerhead. To disconnect the showerhead, unscrew the nut at the shower arm. Take care not to mar the fixture's finish. Use a wrench rather than pliers. Cushion your tool with a rag while you work.

Rinse the showerhead. Run a sharp blast of water through the showerhead by holding it upside down underneath a faucet. Your goal is to rinse loosened debris out through the opening that connects to the shower arm

Dismantle and clean the showerhead. If there are still mineral deposits, you can scrub the showerhead with an old toothbrush and vinegar to loosen debris. Use a toothpick or safety pin to poke out additional deposits. Then soak the parts in vinegar overnight to dissolve any remaining deposits. Rinse again.
Note: Some showerheads boast pliable plastic nubbins that can be manipulated to break calcium deposits loose.

Reassemble and reinstall your showerhead. First wrap new plumbing tape around the threads of the shower arm to ensure a good seal. Reattach the showerhead to the shower arm using the wrench. Protect the fixture's finish with soft rags or towels while you're working.
As always, you can give us a call 704- 544-1909 .

How healthy is your Water?

I never used to think about the water coming out of the taps in my home. I took it for granted that it had been treated so we could happily use it for cooking, making tea and coffee, drinking and cleaning our teeth. It’s strange that when we travel abroad, we’re advised to, and do, routinely drink bottled water yet never think to challenge what comes through the taps in our own homes or places of work.

Lead poisoning can have some long- term effects on health and once lead
is in our bodies it cannot be removed. If lead leaches into drinking water it can lead to systemic and development problems in both adults and children. Water is a fundamental part of life, it makes up about two thirds of our body weight and to remain hydrated, the Department of Health recommends we drink at least 1.2 liters of it every day. It’s one of the things we consume most of and can be a great source of vital minerals and trace elements, so it’s important that what we are drinking is good for us!

Both private and main water resources are also subject to climate vagaries and a growing frequency and intensity of extreme weather conditions can have a real effect on quantity
and quality of supplies. As farming intensifies there is also the constant risk of pollutants such as fertilizer's and pesticides entering rivers, lakes and groundwater sources.
So how often should you check your water supply? I test mine at least once a year, but there are tell-tale signs and occasions when it’s advisable to check out your supply.
  • If you have a private water source
  • If you’re moving to a new property
  • If water appears discolored, or has
a strange taste or smell
  • If your water causes stains on
laundry or fixtures
  • If you know or suspect that you
may have lead pipes give us a call aaacityplumbing.com
  • If water supply equipment, eg. pumps and chlorinators, are wearing rapidly
  • If water-dependent household appliances don’t appear to be working effectively
  • If you have installed a water softener or some sort of filtering system to ensure it is working correctly.
I think  everyone could be responsible for regularly checking their own water supply as we can’t continue to assume that what our water supplier delivers is clean and safe.
I would always test the water before moving to a new property, as well as annual checking to ensure no contamination has occurred since. You’d not think twice about checking water safety while abroad so it makes sense to keep an eye on things closer to home.
Regular testing of water at home, work or community centers does not have to be expensive, there is a range of easy-to-use and easily understood water testing kits available for both urban and private water supplies.  We want to be " your plumber for life" so as always you can call 704-544-1909.
